School is beginning, and we are in the midst of formal rush, a crucial time.  After months of hard work, this year’s rush is shaping up to be our best since Sigma Chi came back to the University of Oklahoma.  We would like to thank all alumni and parents who have helped us by donating their time and money during summer and formal rush.  We would also like to give a special thanks to Arby’s, Texadelphia, and Seven47 for providing us with h’ordeurves during formal rush.

Emerging Leaders & New Officers

This past spring, two of our new initiates, Brett Smith (BK2588 OP) and Scott Mitchell (BK2600), participated in Emerging Leaders, a university sponsored, leadership training program for Greek organizations. The program aims to gather new members from each Greek organization together in a learning environment in order to promote collaboration and leadership skills. It lasted throughout the Spring Semester, and consisted of weekly sessions between the students, the Associate Director of Student Life Kevin Estep, and weekly speakers who gave presentations on topics such as community service, goal planning, and values-based leadership.

Coming out of the program, Brett and Scott both assert it’s worth for bettering Sigma Chi as well as our relations with other Greek organizations. Brett was elected Magister soon after being initiated, and he claims that the program taught him skills that he will use in his new member program this coming fall.

Outstanding Pledgeship

Making the transition into college life, or anything really, can be a daunting task if one is left to their own devices.  Pledgeship at Beta Kappa- Sigma Chi has facilitated the acclimation of many young men into the real world through their structured preparation for brotherhood.  This fall we have seen even greater progress than expected.  This is undoubtedly due to the proven and structured tenants of our program.  These brothers to be have been given an environment that facilitates and supports rigorous academic studies, while still balancing an active social life through weekly events with sororities on campus.  Just last Thursday the 2009 pledge class met with the new members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority for, interestingly enough, laser tag at the house.

The evening began as usual, the pledges and Kappas met and made small talk as they waited for the activities to begin.  As they made their way outside they were greeted by large inflatable fortifications and a man hold a massive “laser rifle”.  At first everyone was somewhat skittish, it is after all a little strange to be walking around with girls with sensors strapped to their heads and carrying guns; but once everyone became comfortable they quickly began to run amok all over the property.  “It was the most fun I have had at a mixer yet” said Sigma Chi Pledge Brian Pedicord.  Apart from the obvious social aspects, pledgeship itself, at Beta Kappa, has a natural bonding effect.  As these young men have work and spend time together day in and day out, no matter their different temperaments, talents, and convictions, they have naturally grown closer and become friends.

33 Young Men Formally Pledge Sigma Chi

The Beta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi formally pledged 33 young men from the University of Oklahoma this evening. A long summer of rush events finally pays off thanks to Rush Chairman Justin Ezell and his rush team, Adam Grable, Andrew Dutcher, Justin Rackleff, Hunter Jurney, and all the brothers and alumni of Beta Kappa that donated their time, their money and their resources to help us find the strongest, most eligible men in University of Oklahoma rush.

Tonights formal pledging was conducted by Sean McLaughlin, our chapter’s Consul and Ethan Goins, their Magister for 2009. Events went off without a hitch, as all 33 pledges are now in possession of their Norman Shields and official Sigma Chi Pledge Pins as they begin their trek through the adventure of Sigma Chi training. We wish all these young men the best of luck, and look forward to the development of their perseverance and character through this year as they are made ready for brotherhood in the Beta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi.

Rush Sigma Chi at The University of Oklahoma

Sigma Chi is one of the strongest and largest fraternities in the world. We have 223 active chapters throughout the United States and Canada.  As of 2007, Sigma Chi has over 220,000 brothers throughout the world.  On June 13, 2005, Sigma Chi was the first Greek-letter society to be honored by the United States Congress for the fraternity’s 150th anniversary.  Our vision statement is “to become the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization- aligned, focused and living our core values.”  Our mission is to develop values-based leaders committed to the betterment of character, campus and community.  Sigma Chi  best serves its purpose by developing, implementing and monitoring programs that foster leadership, build character and promote positive relationship skills which, in turn, enable our member to become productive and caring participants in their families, colleges and communities.

Sigma Chi is a brotherhood with roots in the collegiate experience that engenders a lifelong commitment to strive to achieve true friendship, justice, and the fulfillment of learning as part of our overall responsibilities to the broader communities in which we live.  We pride ourselves on not being a 4-year social club.  Sigma Chi is a lifelong commitment.  We have one of the strongest and most committed alumni of any fraternity.  Sigma Chi is one of the best fraternities in the world. Joining Sigma Chi has made me a better man, student, and friend.

-Justin Ezell

Derby Days Begin!

The opening day of Derby Days at Sigma Chi was a huge success! The director of Children’s Miracle Network and two incredible Miracle Kids reminded all of us of the true meaning of our philanthropic event: to give children a second chance at life. Alongside their family, survivors shared truly incredible stories of overcoming life threatening illnesses through the help and support of our charity, CMN! All the participants are all anticipating a great week of raising money for this notable charity.

Here at Sigma Chi, we love helping people our way: through fun and invigorating competition! Our 3v3 Basketball tournament is now underway and as usual, tricycle racing was more than entertaining this year… especially given the demolition derby style figure 8 track! We all look forward to more fun as Sumo Wrestling is tomorrow along with our Tug-O-War event!

Just as a reminder, throughout the events we will be posting all of our photos online (via Flickr) where you will be able to download full quality versions of everything for free! Here is our photoset, compliments of the Beta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi. Enjoy and feel free to share and print these pictures at will!
