Derby Days Happening Soon!

Next Tuesday April 28 will commence Derby Days 2009, the first since the Beta Kappa Chapter’s reestablishment at the University of Oklahoma. Sean McLaughlin, the Chapter’s Derby Days 2009 Chairman, has been working tirelessly to ensure that the event goes off without a hitch, and is the most successful to date. “We’re all really excited about Derby Days this year,” says McLaughlin. “We have a whole lot in store for this year, and we plan for a really great time, and more importantly to raise a lot of money for our charities.” The charities that Derby Days will benefit are the Children’s Miracle Network and the Huntsman Cancer Society. To raise money, the brothers have been selling ads for the pamphlet that will be printed and handed out to every sorority girl that participates in the event. To help with the event, the Chapter had financial support from both alumni as well as the Beta Kappa Parents’ Association. These funds went to pay for equipment for the event, such as tricycles, tog-a-war ropes, and sumo suits, and other equipment needed to put on the event. Derby Days will be from Tuesday, April 28 through April 30. During the event, sororities will compete in events such as 3-on-3 basketball, which will be judged by members of the OU Basketball team, tug-a-war, and penny wars. Penny wars consists of every sorority having a water jug, which they try to fill entirely with pennies, but can put higher denominations of coin or paper money to take points away from other sororities. This is the philanthropy’s chief way of raising funds for the charitable organizations. If you would like to make a donation to Derby Days’, and hence Children’s Miracle Network and The Huntsman Cancer Institute, please contact Sean McLaughlin at s.mclaughlin@ou.edu.
